Laminated Veneer Lumber (Lvl)
Laminated Veneer Lumber or LVL for short is a high strength very versatile wood product designed for a wide range of applications including:
LVL consists of multiple layers of thin wood veneers bonded together. The grain of each layer generally runs in the same direction (longitudinally) giving the beams superior weight bearing strength. It’s been around since the 70’s and has a reputation for being stronger, straighter, and less prone to warping than solid timber.LVL can also be manufactured in any length and has the additional advantage of having fewer imperfections such as knots, which may weaken solid timber. All our LVL is manufactured to meet the AS/NZS 4357 standard and we can supply a range of sizes or custom shapes to meet your needs.
It’s important to choose the correct material for framing timbers, as these are considered part of the structural aspect of your house or commercial premises.
Even internal walls can play a pivotal role in structural support and Council and building code regulations outline clear requirements for framing materials.
Vinsun Building Supplies can supply a range of framing materials including:
- Pine treated to H2,H3,or H4 for various applications
- LVL type framing materials
- Non-treated timbers such as Douglas Fir
H2 treatment is typical of your internal framing and usually has the blue stain.H2 is treated against borer and termites and is standard in above-ground internal framing applications.H3 has additional protection against moisture but is also for above ground use whereas H4 can withstand much more exposed and severe wet conditions. Both H3 and H4 are resistant to termite and borer attack.
Framing - Treated Pine
Pinus radiata (pine) is the most commonly used wood in Australian residential construction. It’s versatile, cheap and easy to work with but it doesn’t have a particularly strong grain and it requires chemical treatment as protection against rot, borer and termite damage.Pine is most commonly used as wall framing material and for roof trusses. It is also used for joists and bearers and with the proper treatment can be used for decking and external cladding.
We can supply pine in the following:
- H2—for internal above ground use such as framing and is resistant to borer and termite attack
- H3– has additional protection against moisture but is also for above ground use and is also resistant to borer and termite damage
- H4—is resistant to rot even in severely wet environments such as in-ground applications. It is also resistant to borer and termite damage
Pine comes in a range of sizes and grades.
Framing - Oregon Pine
Oregon pine (or Douglas fir as it’s also known) is a North American timber but also grown in NZ plantations. It is a reddish brown wood with a strong grain and a moderately high strength to weight ratio. It also has good stiffness and resistance against decay. It is a relatively inexpensive wood and is a popular choice for rafters, internal framing, flooring, fascias, and bargeboards but it is not an appropriate choice for external structural applications exposed to the weather. There can be some issues with nailing such as splitting close to the ends of beams. It is also not generally a good wood for painting due to the sometimes rough ridging on the surface. However, it is a great a choice for exposed beams and is a great way to enjoy that lovely warm wood look when you’re on a modest budget.
Timber decks can look really smart and offer a wonderful outdoor space for entertaining. They can also add significant resale value to your home. But it’s so easy to get decking wrong especially if you underestimate the effects on timber of high traffic wear and tear and the weather.Make sure you get the right advice about deck design, height restrictions and rail requirements, and the new bushfire zone restrictions on materials before you build a deck.Vinsun Building Supplies will see you right when it comes to designing and building your deck and we have a wide range of really attractive materials to make your deck a real winner. We can supply:
- Softwoods (treated pine)
- Various sizes, grades and profiles
Plywood is an amazingly versatile building material and can be used in flooring, as a substrate for roofing, and as an exterior wall cladding.Plywood comes in a wide range of grades and thicknesses. Plywood that is rated as suitable for structural purposes is also available.Plywood has tremendous strength to weight ratio thanks to the laminated layers of wood veneers with an alternating grain direction.Plywood can look great without any coating or it can be stained or painted—the choice is yours.Plywood is also graded for surface defects, which affect appearance and strength, and you need to understand the building code requirements before you decide. For structural purposes plywood should meet the ASNZ2269 standard and should carry a stamp to attest to its quality. There have been issues in Australia in the past with cheap, inferior imported plywood.Talk to us about your requirements and to make sure you’re getting the best product for your needs.
